Let’s face it, everyone makes mistakes, especially when writing marketing emails. Our world moves so fast these days and with so many different tasks at hand, mistakes are going to happen. When we do make these mistakes we always seem to realize after we hit send.

Here are a few simple items you should check before you hit send on that next email.

The Subject Line

The subject line is one of the most important aspects of an email. It is going to determine whether or not the recipient is even going to open the email, let alone read it. Make sure yoursubject line is to the point and will be able to grab the recipient’s interest.  A major factor isto assure the recipient is getting an email from an actual person. Avoiding key, “SPAM,” words and keeping the subject line to under 50 words will help to get your message in front of more readers.

Some SPAM words to avoid:

  • Ad

  • Click

  • Increase Sales

  • Marketing Solutions

  • Open

The Formatting

When you’re sending an email out you have to know it will be viewed and opened on various devices. If the email’s formatting looks weird to you, it’s definitely going to look funky to the recipient. Another big formatting issue are the colors used in the email. If you are going to use color, make sure that the text is readable on the background you choose to use. Nothing is more annoying than straining your eyes in an attempt to read an email.

Pro Tip: Make sure that all of the images used are formatted correctly.  Stretched, pixelated, or distorted images can quickly destroy an email campaign.

The Attachments

If you’re attaching something to your email make sure it’s attached. There’s nothing worse than receiving that email or multiple emails asking where the attachment is. The majority of the time the attachment is forgotten because it just gets overlooked. You rush through checking everything else and tell the recipient to see the attached document… and you forget to attach it. Simply going back over the email will prevent this most of the time.

Pro Tip: Another way to not forget the attachment is always test the attachment to see if it works. This way if you didn’t attach anything, you’ll know.

The Spelling/Grammar

The last thing to check is the simplest and most common error. Spelling and grammar are the easiest things to make a mistake on. Much like forgetting an attachment, you are trying to get the email out so fast that it simply gets overlooked. Spell check is available and rock solid but there are always mistakes that slip through the cracks. While checking for spelling and grammar errors, also re-read the content. That spelling or grammar error could lead to confusing content which will be an easy fix.

New Call-to-action

Writing and responding to emails has become something we do so quickly that we rarely take the time to review what we wrote. If you stop and look at these few simple items next time you are about to hit send (even though it may take an extra five minutes) it will result in an error free email. It is much better taking time to review what you have, than having small mistakes ruin your whole email.
